Under Catch
What is the best way to catch fish under a snook light?
There are two proven methods, almost completely opposite of each other with the common trait being stealth.
Scared snook don't eat. Be quiet, limit your casts, anchor as far away as you can reliably cast.
1. Small
Snook under lights are feeding primarily on glass minnows and small shrimp. Use the "match the hatch" game plan and you will have a much better chance. Use small shrimp imitations, or small white soft plastics. Flies work great here too.
Your first cast is the one that matters most as this is when they are the least suspicious. The fight will often scatter the other fish or at least shut down the bite. Make it count, but keep it quiet. Normally it will be the smaller snook on top that are the first to rush your bait/lure.
20lb mainline with 30 flouro is a can't miss combo for slot snook unless you are fishing heavy cover.
If you are using shrimp or sardines, freeline them with no weight back in the current.
2. Big Baits, Big Fish
After you've had your fun with the undersized fish up top, you can switch over to something bigger. This is mainly a bridge and dock game, but I promise you that there are giant snook in places your would never believe.
While the smaller fish are up crashing glass minnows where you can see them, there is often a monster lurking below, hiding just behind a piling. These fish are lazy and will sit and wait for something to pass by.
Find a giant pinfish, or even better, a Pigfish and get him down to the bottom with just enough weight to hold him there.
A 12" ladyfish is another great bait for this application.
This is a different kind of fishing but if you are patient and can pick your spots, you will pull up over slot fish with surprising regularity.
This is not light tackle fishing, and something closer to grouper gear is in order. A 4/0 reelspooled with 40 braid and 60 mono leader is just about perfect.
Slowly drift that big bait back around the structure so that by the time it hits the bottom it's sitting right beside it. Too far in front of the piling and she won't come out to get it. Too far back and she'll run right or left and cut you off on the barnacles.
This is locked drag, tug of war fishing where the fight is over in less than 2 min, but it's a frantic "all or nothing" battle.
Treat these fish with extra care. The quicker the fight and release, the better the snook fishing will be in years to come. Quick picture and back in the water.
That should get you started. . . you're probably itching to hit the water by now.
