What is the difference between regular wheelchair and a transport wheelchair?
A transport wheelchair has small rear wheels that the person in the wheelchair cannot easily reach or move. This kind of wheelchair needs to be pushed by someone else.
A regular wheelchair has large rear wheels with a push rim attached so they come within reach of the person in the wheelchair and can be moved by that person so that using this type of wheelchair someone who cannot walk can get about independently, without needing to be pushed by someone else.
Transport wheelchairs are usually used only in hospitals and airports, and sometimes in care homes. If they are to be used longer term by an individual then they should only be used for people who have limited understanding and could cause a danger to themselves if they were able to move their chair for themselves.
