Patient Lift
Wednesday, September 14th, 2011Nurses: What is the normal etiquette for checking/inserting a urinary catheter for a male patient?
Would you walk in and just lift the sheet/gown (while he's awake or when he's asleep) or ask him about it or what? Would you make family/friends leave the room? What is good etiquette?
No, don't just lift the sheet/gown.
Be open and honest and explain what you're about to do (I'd recommend this even if he's asleep).
Definitely ask family/friends to leave the room.
Normal etiquette would be to be professional, but if it's appropriate (decided case by case) some nurses like to make jokes to lighten the mood (but preferably not about his size lol)
