Weight Aluminum
Friday, July 29th, 2011What's the formula for how much weight determinig a sealed aluminum cylinder may contain water?
Have'bateau pontoon 2 to 24 "x 28 'pontoons 28 @ 3-1/16" thick. I want to turn it into a campboat but I am concerned about too cumbersome & making it unstable. Sorry. Wall thickness of 3 / 16. "No 3-1/16"
You need to calculate how much water is displaced by cylinders. The volume of a cylinder is (pi) * (radius ^ 2) * (length) or about 88 cubic feet The density of water is 62.4 lb / ft ^ 3 (for the site Web as a source stated) So each cylinder would support appx £ 5500. Since you have two: £ 11 000. Of course, this would amount to a boat would support in calm water with balanced, zero static margin of safety. The actual amount that I would put on such a boat is probably 20% of this amount. It's still about £ 2200. A better way would be to check the specifications on a similar pontoon boat - they have a * lot * more experience in boat building and compensate for wind, waves, etc.
