Do you have good or bad experiences with multi-use switches in an ordinary household switch box?
I have a light switch with a loose wire inside. I tried tightening the connection, but something inside the plastic housing is rattling. I decided to replace it, and at the hardware store came across a little box that looks like it will fit in a standard switch box with a special switch plate. It had a switch at the top half, and an outlet at the bottom, like a "two for one" unit. Is there a downside to replacing the switch with one of these units?
Ok, if you want, NOT a recommendation. Lights should go on one circuit, convenience outlets on a separate circuit. Light circuits are made to carry lower amperage (15 amp) whereas the convenience outlet of a typical duplex is rated at 20 amps. In most modern installations they run the circuits with 12 gauge, if that is the case, you can change the circuit breaker to the 20 amp. (if not remain at 15 amp). The box will have one black in (2 pigtails- one for the switch, one for the dedicated outlet)and one black out (hot- this is switched).(Brass, 3x) Make sure that you are switching the circuit. One white in- one out (this is neutral) (Cut this splice together and pigtail off) goes to the zinc colored side of the outlet. Email if you have problems.
