Leg Caddy
I need a new pc. Can I transfer the files/programs I need from the old hard drive via a usb hard drive caddy?
My pc is on its last legs so I want to get a new one, however I havee loads of files and programs and downloads on the hard drive I want to put onto the new one. I have a USB hard drive caddy which I can put the drive from the old pc into. Will I be able to easily transfer from the old drive to the new pc? (I also have Steam which I need to transfer over)
Is there something wrong with the old HDD? You didn't say. If not, just install the old hard drive in the new computer. It'll be just like your old pc, but everything else will be new. Make sure you set the BIOS to boot from the correct hard drive.
If you're using Windows, you'll likely have to connect to MS over the internet or call them to verify you've made hardware changes. It shouldn't be a big deal though.
If the HDD is dying, you might want to just start fresh. In that case, are you building the new pc or buying a prebuilt? I highly recommend building your own. Then you'll be more familiar with how it works, and know what to replace when things break. Also, why pay certain companies $80 an hour to fix your pc (which is a ripoff) when you can fix it yourself? I prefer a certain New egg dot com place for buying my parts, although there are other stores like Tiger direct dot com that are also good.
If you do go with a prebuilt (I'm sorry), you'll want to install all of your old programs from the cd or whatever that they originally came on. Simply copying them from the old hard drive usually doesn't work. However, you can try using the Files and Settings Transfer wizard in Windows to get your favorites and other settings across to the new pc.
Whichever way you decide to go, you're in for a bit more research on how to proceed. This answer should at least give you an idea of what direction you want to go.
