Cane Crutch
I'm getting a walking boot, will I be able to walk right away?
I broke my ankle & had surgery to insert 12 screws & a metal plate. Next week I'm finally taking the cast off and getting a walking boot. Will they give me a cane or do I still use the crutches (which I hate)? How soon before I'm able to walk normally without the cane/crutches? How long do I have to wear the boot? Should I practice physical therapy at home as soon as they give me the boot or after I stop wearing it? How long before I can start running? Let me know all the details. I can't wait to walk again!!!
First of all, it depends on many factors especially which bones and what type of fracture. Plus what the surgeon actually saw during the procedure as well as your follow-up xrays.
Most people are able to start partial weight bearing immediately with a boot. By this I mean gradually putting more weight on your foot and less on your crutches. Soon you will be crutch free.
Keep this in mind though. A walking boot is a substitute for a walking cast. It is just as important. The advantage of the boot is that you can start motion exercises when directed.
The whole key now is how well you follow direction - both from your physician and a physical therapist. Trying to do too much will aggravate the problem. Not doing exercises when instructed will delay the recovery.
