Cane Aid
Anyone with a visual impairment and ever been pregnant, I have a question?
have a vision impairment that causes me to be legally blind. I usually do not use a cane or any type of aid to get around because I am able to use my vision satisfactorily. However, I am now pregnant and I am concerned about being off balance, falling, etc. It's not often that I miss a step, but it does happen occasionally and I just trip. But I am more worried about actually falling as my belly gets bigger... Is there anyone out there who didn't use a cane before, but used one while pregnant? Does it help a lot?
I'm a complete supporter that all people who are legally blind (or not legally blind but experiencing mobility problems, for that matter) should be using a white cane or guide dog.
If tripping happens occasionally already, it means your vision is definitely already bad enough to be using a cane for mobility- you may have vision, but there's nothing 'good' about avoiding the tools of blindness / visual impairment that keep you safe. If you're having accidents sometimes and don't see a problem with that, that's denial.
Call your state's rehab department, lighthouse for the blind, or any other organization of or for blind people and ask about getting mobility lessons. Also contact your local chapter of the NFB and meet up with others- more likely than not, they probably know some blind parents or have a few in the group.
In the mean time, purchase a cane that is at least as tall as your shoulder (measure the inches, if you have to) and start using it, especially on curbs and steps. You can buy canes from the national federation of the blind's shop (usually cheap, Light Weight, very sturdy, good tactile transmission) as well as from ambutech (heavy, but foldable (nfb sells telescopic, which I like more) and accept roller tips, which some people prefer)
